About

We built the teleprompter we wanted to record with.

Floating Teleprompter is a browser teleprompter built around one idea every other web teleprompter misses: it should float on top of the app you're recording with, not take over the whole screen.

The problem we couldn't stop thinking about

Every web teleprompter is fullscreen or in-tab. That's fine if you're reading to a webcam with nothing else open — but the moment you're recording in OBS, on a Zoom call, or in Loom, the teleprompter is buried behind your recording window. You end up squinting at a second monitor or, worse, reading off to the side so your eyes never meet the camera.

The fix existed in dedicated apps that cost money and need installing. We wanted it free, in the browser, on top of everything.

What we built instead

Floating Teleprompter uses Document Picture-in-Picture — a browser capability that lets a page pop part of its interface into a small, always-on-top window. We move the scrolling script into that window so it hovers over OBS, Zoom, Loom or any other app while you record. The same scroll engine keeps running; you just drag the window under your camera and read.

There's no backend. The whole tool is static files plus a little JavaScript running on your machine. Your script is saved only in your browser, and nothing is ever uploaded.

Our principles

  • Your words are your business. Scripts stay on your device. We don't store them, read them, or analyze them — the architecture makes it impossible, not just a policy promise.
  • No accounts, ever. Open the page and start reading. No email, no onboarding, no CRM.
  • Free, with no watermark. Since there's nothing to host or store, there's nothing to charge for.
  • Works everywhere a browser does. The floating window is desktop Chromium; everywhere else falls back to fullscreen — the teleprompter itself works on every device.

Who built this

Floating Teleprompter is built and maintained by Shrestha Tripathi, an independent software engineer who makes small, privacy-first browser tools. It started as a fix for a personal annoyance — recording tutorials in OBS with no good way to read a script — and grew into a free tool anyone can use.

No company, no investors, no roadmap meetings. Just a tool that does one thing well. Questions or ideas? See the contact page.

Try it now
